ABOUT THE ARTIST
My name is May Atwell and I am an interdisciplinary artist based in Texas. Currently I am studying Industrial Design at Savannah College of Art and Design.
As an artist, I find myself drawn to exploring my experiences through the personal lens of my emotions. How do I process the world during emotionally tense periods of my life? Through the use of photo-transfer of personal images and different media, like journal entries and clippings from albums, I juxtapose reality with my personal perception to create a blend of each on the canvas. My work explores themes of the human experience, loneliness in young adulthood, and the intricacies of relationships.
I use an old canon power shot from 2008 that was handed down to me to capture moments that mean something to me, even if it’s just documenting the feeling of a room. Music, indie comics, and personal archives are where I draw some of my biggest inspirations from. Through my work, I hope to take the viewer through the stories of my teenage experiences, also allowing them to find parts of their personal experiences in mine.
